Location

Ever since its cultivation 5 centuries ago, coffee has become an inseparable part of our daily life across multiple cultures. Its social-economic impact is deeply rooted in our society, affecting local small business owners and foreign smallholders.  Due to the current climate crisis, the area of cultivatable land will reduce by 50% by 2050 thus threatening the livelihoods of millions. There are 3 key solutions to this crisis:

01 //

02 //

03 //

This proposal aims to achieve all 3 of these targets to protect the longevity of our coffee industry and coffee-drinking culture. There is no better place to achieve these than where the coffee-drinking industry first blossomed in the UK - Oxford.

PROTECT the future of coffee through research.

PRODUCE quality products while assisting partnered smallholders.

PROMOTE the importance of the coffee industryby allowing visitors to experience the productionprocess up close.

PROJECT CONCEPT

01 // The building emerges from the landscape with the local language of pitched roofs.

04 // The ground floor is highly permeable like the tree stem, linking internal and external spaces.

02 // A flow that connects the entire site by creating a topography within the landscaping.

05 // The office spaces extend from the “stem” of the building like the tree canopy, allowing views out.

06 // Sunlight seeps through the skylights casting dappled lights like the tree crown.

03 // The internal experience of travelling underneath a coffee tree.

MASTERPLAN LAYOUT

EXISTING SITE // Limited access & poorly placed playgrounds.
